How to make money in Dressmaker

Fabric is the only real cost, so money problems are buying problems. Here is how to keep every order in profit.

How do you make money fast in Dressmaker?

Coins come from two places: the Reward on a commission and the off-rack window, where you sell dresses you design yourself. Most players who go broke overspend on fabric and accessories in the first hours. Buy only the metres the sketchbook asks for (plus a little buffer), reuse leftover cloth on small parts, and skip accessories unless the client asks for them, because accessories add no tags. Since Build 403 a commission the client accepts still pays even if a bar fails, so do not over-engineer cheap orders. Off-rack dresses need no measurements, so they are quick: build a dress from fabric you already own and sell it from the window. Check each plan with the profit calculator before you buy anything.

Why you are always broke

  • Buying the dream fabric for every part. Silk and velvet on a sleeve nobody scores rarely pays back. Spend on the big panels the score is weighted towards.
  • Buying in small trips. Each trip tends to round up to another whole metre. Buy the full amount once.
  • Accessory piles. Brooches cost 20 to 40 coins each and do not move tag bars. Keep them for the look you want, not the score.
  • Losing track of scraps. The sewing-room list only shows the first 10 m of a bolt, so players rebuy fabric they already own.

Since Build 443 colour and fabric type are scored by area. A cheap fabric in the right colour on the skirt does more for the score than an expensive one on the collar.

Check an order before you buy

Type the metres per fabric and the price you see in the shop, plus the commission Reward. The calculator rounds up to whole metres and shows the profit. If you already own some of the cloth, enter it as on hand.

Type the sketchbook's Approx. Xm fabric required and what you own. Pick a fabric name and its shop price per metre fills in (359 fabrics, checked for Build 446).

Selling it instead nets 459. Selling pays more, but the commission still needs a dress, and story progress only moves when you complete it.
Opulence and Excess tracker (5,000 gold on one dress)

The achievement counts what you spend on one successful dress, and the game shows no meter. Spend so far on this dress: 410, so 4,590 to go.

Since Build 403 a commission still pays if the character accepts it, even when requirements fail.

Sell dress or Complete Commission?

Dress Complete: the Sell dress offer (869 here) can be higher than the Reward · Screenshot: Dressmaker (Cozy Lives / Free Lives)

When a dress is done the game offers Complete Commission, Keep working or Sell dress with a price. Selling can pay more than the Reward on an expensive dress, but the client's story does not move forward and you do not earn their friendship. Use *Sell dress* for experiments and dresses you made for fun; complete story commissions.

Off-rack dresses: the steady income

  1. Open the sketchbook without a client and design anything you like.
  2. Use fabric you already own where you can; leftovers from commissions are perfect for bodices and sleeves.
  3. Sew it with care, because quality affects the offer.
  4. Choose Sell as off-rack (renamed in Build 443) to put it in the window.
  5. If it will not sell, check every piece was sewn; a missed small part keeps it unfinished.

Players report the off-rack offer roughly follows (materials + labour) × quality × prestige. That formula is community-made and unconfirmed; the estimator on the calculator page uses it with that warning.

Late game: Opulence and Excess

Once money stops being a problem, the Opulence and Excess achievement asks you to spend over 5,000 coins on one successful dress (fabric plus accessories). There is no meter, so add it up yourself: the calculator total is a good tracker. See the achievement guide.

Questions players ask

+Do failed commissions still pay?

Yes, since Build 403 (Sep 22, 2026) a commission pays if the character accepts it, even with a failed requirement bar.

+Do accessories increase the sell price?

They add to material cost, which players believe feeds the off-rack price, but they do not raise tags. Do not buy them just for score.

+Why won't my off-rack dress sell?

Usually one small piece was not sewn. Go back into the dress and check every component is complete.

+Is there a way to get free fabric?

No free fabric source is confirmed. Reuse leftovers: anything you did not cut stays in your inventory.

+What did Build 443 change about money?

It renamed budget to Reward on commissions, renamed Sell to Sell as off-rack, and added a delete button for off-rack dresses.
